Northwest Coast Indian Art Traditions

Chilkat Blanket
"Chilkat Blanket", Tlingit People, c. 1850, Private Collection

The art of Northwest Coast Indians from Alaska, Canada and Washington possesses a beauty as haunting and elusive as the dense fogs that blanket the region’s shores. Probably best known for their unforgettable totem poles and dance masks, the art of these Native peoples is one of vivid form and complex meaning, drawing inspiration from both the surrounding world and the spirits believed to animate all things in that world.

Close to 200 historical artifacts, drawn from both public and private collections, will be on display in this exhibition. They will range from the Museum’s own 20 ft. high 1916 totem pole, to intricate basketry, colorful blankets, gleaming silver jewelry, delicately carved bowls and bentwood boxes.
