Works by 35 Contemporary Northern California Metalsmiths
July 21 - October 14, 2007

This invitational exhibition brings together thirty-five creative artists from the amazing world of Northern California fine art metalsmithing. It features a wide variety of work in many styles by some of the region’s premiere metalsmiths as well as rising new talents. Pieces on display range from delicately wrought jewelry and fabricated sculptures to more massive hand-forged creations. These art forms descend from a rich lineage that includes centuries of silver and goldsmith techniques, the lavish sculptural Fabergé eggs, the folk art ingenuity of the historic village blacksmith and a century of modern art design.

California itself has a long history of active, talented metal artists. In recent years Northern California has especially witnessed a renaissance in the art of metalsmithing, thanks to the presence of several college-level metal arts departments throughout the state as well as programs at institutions such as the Mendocino Art Center. Many of the artists in the exhibition have taught classes at the Art Center as well as at other regional institutions. This has created a strong network of communication, knowledge, and creative experimentation among these fine metalsmiths and their students. We applaud their commitment to craftsmanship, their vision, and their exploration of materials as they forge new metalwork traditions.

In comparison with other contemporary art forms, metalsmithing does not receive the amount of fanfare nor is it often highlighted in major exhibitions. We hope this show will counteract that vacuum by introducing viewers to the rich array of styles, techniques and objects being produced by a relatively small number of artists. Our process of selection for this show included the development of our personal contacts in the metalsmith community combined with many hours on the Internet reviewing the websites of both galleries and individual artists. The primary themes that emerged from this survey of contemporary work include nature-inspired subjects and forms (especially by artists living in or near rural areas), sculptural creations revealing alternative realities, and abstract design. Whatever the subject or object, all these master craftsmen and craftswomen apply their patience, talent, and skill to creating exceptional fine art that continues the rich tradition of centuries of metalwork.
