An exhibition by three contemporary artists working with fundamental elements: earth, air, fire, water, metals and light. Douglas Browe, of Hoyman/Browe Studio in Ukiah, investigates local resources by prospecting his own clay to create large-scale ceramic vessels. The works, once woodfired, impart the impression of being formed geologically, having evolved from the earth. Rebecca Johnson, of Anderson Valley, uses metal, stone and wood in her sculptural creations which are inspired by observed forms in nature. Her colorful quiet paintings evoke tranquil moments evidencing this same vision. From Comptche and Ukiah, Tom Liden creates color-saturated images stimulated by omnipresent nature, unique surfaces, and his travels. While the exhibit contains occasional recognizable images, primarily it presents abstract interpretations of the natural elements in this northern region of California transformed through artistic alchemy. This exhibition was made possible thanks to California Arts Council, a state agency; the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, a federal agency; and the Sun House Guild. The Grace Hudson Museum is a division of the Department of Community Services, City of Ukiah.
