Granville Redmond, "Marin County"
California Paintings 1910 - 1940 is an exhibition of 41
paintings collected by Mills College for the opening of its Art Gallery in
the first half of the 20th century. These lovely oils and watercolors
provide an enlightening cross-section of art activity in Northern California
during an active and eclectic period. It includes many of the most
prominent California artists of the period such as Maurice Braun, Maynard
Dixon, Granville Redmond and William Wendt along with some lesser-known
but also interesting talents.
Joseph Raphael, "Still Life"
The San Francisco Bay Area had a dynamic art scene in the 1920's. It was
considered by many to be second only to that of New York. The huge art
exhibitions during the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition
stimulated a high level of public interest in art. The years following the
Exposition saw the donation of the De Young Museum, the founding of the San
Francisco Museum of Art, the opening of the California Palace of the Legion
of Honor, and the establishment of an art department at the University of
California in Berkeley.
Anne Bremer, "Carmel"
For the sake of simplicity, and because of the public's ongoing love affair
with Impressionism, many of the artists in this exhibition are now often called
California Impressionists. They typically painted outdoors (en plein air)
capturing views of the state's coastline, hills, and mountains in bold brush
strokes and bright colors. But Tonalism, with its more subdued colors and
somber mood, was still an important force in Northern California. The
exhibit includes works by such important Tonalist artists as Guiseppe
Cadenasso, Xavier Martinez, Gottardo Piazzoni and Will Sparks.
Anne Bremer, "Self Portrait"
Mills College Art Museum is fortunate to have these works as a kind of time
capsule of California art, circa 1925. Many of these paintings have not been
exhibited in decades, so it seemed a fitting celebration of Mills College's
sesquicentennial to give the public around the state an opportunity to see
this fascinating group of pieces. Museum curator Marvin Schenck notes that
"We are excited to be able to present the work of Grace Hudson's
contemporaries and the subsequent generation of talented California
painters. Their works capture the period in California art when strict
realism gave way to an artist's impression or even abstraction of a
subject."

William Wendt, "Wandering Shadows"
