Inspired Objects, an exhibit at Ukiah's Grace Hudson Museum, showcases exceptional craft art by Mendocino County artists. Organized by the Hudson Museum and sponsored by the Savings Bank of Mendocino County, this crafts competition was juried by Suzanne Baizerman, Curator of Crafts and Decorative Arts, The Oakland Museum; Marilyn da Silva, Professor and Program Chair of Jewelry/Metal Arts, California College of Arts and Crafts; and Thomas Orr, Head of Ceramics Department, Oregon College of Arts and Crafts. They were impressed with the work they saw. Their jurors' statement in the exhibit catalogue explains: "It was evident in the entries that artists were concerned with a variety of issues. You will see interpretations and variations of traditional craft processes and media. Also, there are new and non-traditional approaches, where personal and political expression are apparent in the objects."

Out of close to two hundred entries, only 31 were selected for exhibition. Twenty-nine artists are represented, with two works being the joint effort of artist couples. Ceramic artists selected include Brian Alexander, John Arndt, Chris Bing and Jan Wax, Nancy Bulkley, Jan Hoyman-Browe, Daphne Gillen, Doug Kell, Sara Mann, and Jessica Rae Thompson. Textile artists include Carolyn and Vincent Carleton, Lynn Harris, Lolli Jacobsen, Linda MacDonald, Adriane Nicolaisen, Sheila O'Hara, and Iren Rothenberger. Artists working in wood include Taimi Barty, Ejler Hjorth-Westh, Dave Peck, and Dan Stalzer. Jan Hinson, Nancy McHone, Dennis Toth, and Hugh Wiley created mixed media works. Dana Driver and Rene´ Roberts are showing jewelry and Tim Murray presents a handblown glass bowl. Also included are two additional works by the guest curators, Holly Brackmann, fiber artist and professor at Mendocino College, and Doug Browe, studio potter and owner of Hoyman/Browe Studio in Ukiah. It is through Browe and Brackmann's generous efforts that the Museum was able to reach out to the various communities of regional artists and make this exhibit a reality.

The isolation and natural beauty of the Mendocino County is a continuing inspiration for the local artists. The influence of surrounding natural design is evident in many of the works in the exhibition. However, if there is anything authentically Mendocino in style, it is the individualistic expression of its craftspeople that follows a commitment to their own inner voice. The resulting inspired objects reaffirm our shared humanity through the joy of experiencing objects so beautifully crafted and uniquely imagined.
