The featured reader for March will be Martin Hickel. Following a degree in Journalism at San Francisco State University, Martin founded the Lassen County Times, a weekly newspaper in Susanville, and then also did stints on community newspapers in Mendocino County. His interest in poetry began in high school. To date, he has published over a dozen chapbooks of his own poetry. His work also appears in a number of anthologies and poetry websites such as the annual Overthrowing Capitalism – Poetry of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade, as well as Canary. He was a member of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade founded by San Francisco Poet Laureate-Emeritus Jack Hirschman.

Writers Read has been happening in Ukiah since 1999, and occurs on the last Thursday of almost every month. The program focuses on poetry, spoken word, short stories, song, and expository prose. The evening begins with a featured reader and then is followed by an hour of open mic starting around 8:00.
